Occlusal Guards Jupiter FL

An occlusal guard is often referred to as a nightguard, and it is worn to protect teeth for patients who suffer from bruxism, which is the subconscious condition of grinding and clenching. This condition is often temporary, but the effects can be highly damaging and expensive. Wearing this simple device can save you pain, money, and time in the dentist chair. If you think you may suffer from bruxism, talk to a member of our team at Roy C. Blake III, DDS, MSD, Maxillofacial Prosthodontist. Dr. Roy Blake can review your teeth and discuss symptoms to look for and help you protect your teeth.

Bruxism

Bruxism is a dental condition that involves the grinding or clenching of teeth, most often while you sleep. It can be highly damaging to your teeth, as well as your jaw. TMJ dysfunction and bruxism are usually discussed together. Most patients experience limited bouts of bruxism, it is generally associate with stress.

Bruxism is generally a subconscious disorder, meaning the patient does it without thinking about it, frequently while they sleep. Because so many patients do it while they sleep, they are typically unaware, but there are signs that you can look for including:
•  Soreness or Tiredness: Many patients wake finding that their jaw feels sore or tired, clenching and grinding can be quite a workout for your jaw.
•  Pain in your Teeth: The act of clenching your teeth tightly can cause both tiny hairline cracks and fractures in your teeth as well larger, more noticeable breaks. Though the patient may be aware of large breakage, tiny fractures can be missed though the patient may be aware of sensitivity or pain in their teeth.
•  Flattening of Teeth: Grinding your teeth can have a similar effect to sanding them, the patient smooths out the chewing surfaces of their teeth.
•  Worn Enamel: The hard outer enamel layer is unusually thinned, worn, or breaking down.

Occlusal Guard

An occlusal guard, or night guard, is a silicone device designed to fit over your teeth. It should not be bulky or uncomfortable. There are both store-bought one size fits all and dentist customized nightguards available. Having your night guard customized means having it fit right, the way it’s supposed to. A one size fits all version often means it won’t fit right at all. Patients who choose this option generally do not wear the device as frequently as they should, for the length of time they should. We can create a night guard that will fit comfortably, meaning you are much more likely to wear it, meaning it will do its job much more effectively.

Bruxism Related Tooth Damage

The damage caused by bruxism can be extensive, and not necessarily immediately known. Some damage is obvious, such as breakage. A chipped or broken tooth is immediately noticeable because it is generally painful. Other damage, such as the wearing or flattening of teeth can occur over longer periods of time, but can be painful or make chewing more difficult. Even less obvious, although still highly problematic, are hairline cracks and fractures. Bacteria can rest in these tiny spaces and cause decay, bacteria can then reach the root of the tooth causing infection. We can help you bypass these problems with a simple silicone device.
