What Are Dental Veneers?
Veneers are tooth covers for a natural-looking smile. Usually, veneers are made from porcelain, because porcelain mimics natural teeth in brightness and durability. Some people choose to try composite veneers instead, but they do not last as long, and they are not as shiny or durable as porcelain veneers. Dentists place veneers over the front side of your natural teeth so they are covered completely.
Veneer Benefits
Veneers offer dental patients several advantages over other forms of cosmetic and restorative dentistry. The largest advantage to having veneers is that veneers can fix multiple ongoing problems with your teeth that would take months or years of dental care to repair.
For example, if you have multiple issues with your front teeth, veneers can fix all of the issues with your top teeth at one time. Veneers are an excellent cosmetic option for fixing chipped, cracked, or discolored teeth. Instead of undergoing bonding, whitening, or even crowning procedures, veneers can fix all of your tooth problems all at once.
Also, veneers are thin, which means once they are cemented over the top of your natural teeth, they are comfortable to wear. Veneers give you an instant confidence boost and can really bolster your self-esteem. They are easy to maintain and very stain-resistant when taken care of properly. Veneers are considered a minimally invasive procedure, so there will not be a need for sedation or even pain medication.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Veneers?
While veneers are a perfect solution for many people, some may not be good candidates for them and may need to seek another solution. First, people who use tobacco may need to quit before they get veneers because the residue will dim the shine of their new teeth.
You also need to have good oral health, which means healthy teeth and gums. If you have gum disease, you need to have it treated before you get veneers. Tooth decay can cause your veneers to slip and not place perfectly, and gum disease can cause your gums to swell, which means your veneers will not fit correctly.
Also, veneers are best for adults who have cosmetic issues with their teeth, such as discolored teeth, teeth that are too large or too small, or even teeth that are too widely spaced. Veneers can cover many minor imperfections to give you a great smile.
The Veneer Application Process
If you are a good candidate for veneers, your veneer placement will happen in several steps. First, our office will arrange a consultation with the dentist. The dentist will discuss your veneer options with you and ask you what your goals are for your teeth with veneers.
Our dental professionals will also take X-rays and pictures of your teeth so a perfect set of veneers can be created for you. You may even get to see a visualization of what your teeth will look like once your veneers have been placed.
Next, our dentist will grind a bit of your tooth enamel off each tooth to provide a surface for your veneers to cement to. Our practitioners will make a mold of each tooth to create veneers for you. Sometimes, we can create veneers for you the same day, but often, it takes a week or two, so you will be able to wear temporary veneers until the permanent ones arrive at our office.
When the permanent veneers are ready, our dentist removes the temporary veneers and uses a gel to prepare your teeth for veneer placement. Your veneers will be cemented to your natural teeth, and our dentist will use a special light to ensure the veneer cement is hard.
Keep in mind that your teeth may be a bit sensitive to hot or cold foods for a few days after you get veneers. Because our dentist had to remove tooth enamel to place veneers, your teeth may be more sensitive than usual for a little while. Your tooth sensitivity should be back to normal in a few days.
Veneer Durability
If you care for your veneers properly, you will be able to wear them for well past a decade. Porcelain veneers can last between 10 and 20 years, while composite veneers last a bit less, from between five to 10 years. You can help maintain the durability of your veneers by following some standard veneer care tips.
First, you will want to consume alcohol in moderation. Excessive use of alcohol can cause the cement underneath your veneers to weaken. This can cause your veneers to sustain damage, such as cracks or stains. Reducing your alcohol consumption is also beneficial for your overall health as well.
Also, be careful with any hard foods you eat while you have veneers. Avoid chewing ice, and be sure to cut hard foods such as carrots or apples into smaller pieces before chewing them. You also need to avoid overly sticky foods, such as chewing gum and candy, which can become stuck to your veneers and may be hard to get off.
You need to continue to visit our dentist every six months. Our dentist can ensure that your veneers are free from plaque and tartar and polish them perfectly, which cuts down on wear and tear on your veneers. You can brush your teeth with a soft toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. You can also floss with veneers. If you take care of your veneers, you will have years of perfect smiling ahead of you.
